OpposeNot clearly freely licensed, it's "used with permission". Gmaxwell 23:09, 22 October 2005 (UTC)- It is clearly licensed. We received these pictures from the copyright holder with a permission to put them on our site under an attribution license, and the copyright holder confirmed they were ok with the licence as displayed on the site. (On the other hand, they insisted about the attribution.) David.Monniaux 00:18, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
- What is not clear is: does the permission extend to others? Can I put it on mysite with attribution? On en we delete such images when we can't also claim fair use. I do not see how with permission is free enough for the commons. Gmaxwell 03:29, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
- They gave explicit permission by email for use with attribution, and then I showed them the page where we said very visibly The copyright holder of this file allows anyone to use it for any purpose, provided that the copyright holder is properly attributed., and they said these conditions were fine with them. What do you want more? A contract signed in triplicate by the director of the synchrotron facility? :-) David.Monniaux 12:25, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
- In copyright various rights are reserved to the copyright holder unless explicitly granted to others. use is not generally considered to automaticaly include things like derivative works, and commercial redistribution. Because these rights are automatically reserved the copyright holder must make the grant explicitly. Please see the text on the template used on Enwiki. --Gmaxwell 19:28, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
- In an IRC conversation with David it was made clear to me that sufficently clear permission has been directly provided by the source. I withdraw my objection. --Gmaxwell 20:34, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
