Summary

[edit]
Description Engraving of a 1776 Continental currency coin. Versions were made from silver, brass, and pewter. The denomination is unknown, and may have varied by the metal used, though (especially for the silver version) it is thought that it was a Spanish dollar coin. The design came from an earlier Continental currency note, which was made by Benjamin Franklin. For more information, see here or here.
Date coin; 1851 engraving

The Library of Congress source appears to be Lossing's 1881 Harpers' Popular Cyclopaedia of United States History, page 265, though the engraving itself dates at least from Lossing's 1851 The Pictorial Field-book of the Revolution, page 318.
