Notes
English: On 12 October 1917, a day after he completed the sketch, Jackson painted this preliminary study for a painting. Working from the sketch, he rearranged the landscape elements so that the trench is on the right, the trees are taller and cross diagonally, and the clouds are white and rounded. He added some cottages and a line of soldiers on horseback below the trees.
