Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Wood engraving illustration for the story "A Foggy Story" by H. A. Rudall. Once a Week magazine, volume 8, page 477. Effie, a developmentally-disabled, nonverbal child, left the house in foggy weather but managed to return safely. In this illustration, she is being welcomed home by family members with varying degrees of concern, wonder, and joy. Pinwell placed a symbolic mirror (reflecting a scene different than the one surrounding it) in the picture to indicate that Effie sees the world differently than other people. He seems to have depicted her as having T21/Down Syndrome, which wasn't yet formally described in 1863.
