Description |
English: Adam Duncan was a British admiral who defeated the Dutch fleet off Camperdown. This portrait shows him wearing the star and sash of the Russian Imperial Order of St. Alexander Nevsky, awarded to him by Tsar Paul I (1797). The gold medal is possibly that granted to him as an augmentation of honour to his paternal coat of arms: Pendant by a ribbon argent and azure from a naval crown or a gold medal thereon two figures the emblems of Victory and Britannia; Victory alighting on the prow of an antique vessel, crowning Britannia with a wreath of laurel; and below the word "Camperdown". |
