Die Darstellung des Mondes mit seinen Mondflecken hat zu Spekulationen über astronomische Kenntnisse des Malers geführt, der vermutlich schon, wie sein Zeitgenosse Galileo Galilei auch, ein Fernrohr besessen haben könnte. Einzigartig bisher in der Malerei: die Darstellung des Sternenhimmels mit der Milchstraße und das Sternbild des "Großen Bärs" (=Großer Wagen) oben rechts.
