Description

Jonah is one of the twelve prophets that line the parapet of the staircase to the Basilica of Our Good Lord Jesus of Matosinhos in Congonhas do Campo, Minas Gerais. Aleijadinho, whose real name is Antõnio Francisco da Costa Lisboa, created these life-size sculptures in soapstone.

In Western art history, Jonah was often taken to be the forerunner of Christ. He was swallowed by a whale and thrown out alive three days later. This narrative in the Old Testament points to the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ in the New Testament.
