Description de l'épisode dans le livret du Salon de 1827 où le tableau est exposé : "Après la mort d'Oedipe, roi de Thèbes, Etéocle et Polynice, ses deux fils, convinrent d'occuper le trône alternativement, chacun pendant une année. Polynice y monta le premier, et le céda à Etéocle ; celui-ci, après l'année révolue, gardant la couronne, au mépris de la convention, Adraste, beau-père de Polynice, Tydée, son beau-frère, le devin Amphiaraüs, Capanée, Hippomédon et Pharthénopée, fils d'Atalante, se réunirent à Polynice, et marchèrent contre Thèbes. / A la vue de cette ville, les sept chefs immolent un taureau noir, et jurent sur la victime de venger Polynice."English: The Seven Chiefs against Thebes, history painting by Angelique Mongez exhibited at the Salon of 1827. |
