JPEG file comment | ANTONIO DA FABRIANO
(active 1447-1489) Coronation of the Virgin 1452 Tempera on wood, 89 x 64 cm Akademie der bildenden Künste, Vienna Originally this panel was the front of a double-sided standard that would have been carried in processions. The reverse of the standard represented the stigmatisation of St Francis. Noteworthy is the rich ornamentation. The standard, the reverse side of which is dated 1452, is a copy of the standard that Gentile da Fabriano painted for the Franciscan church in Fabriano around 1420.
