Valentine Visconti ou le venin de la biscia, Laurent Hablot, pp. 179-194[1] Les armoiries écartelées concédées par Charles VI à Jean-Galéas Visconti, comte de vertus, en 1394. Ces armoiries Visconti ont fait l’objet, en 1394, d’une modification importante. À la demande expresse de la diplomatie milanaise depuis 1393, Charles VI concède à son oncle et allié Jean-Galéas, une augmentation d’armoiries composée d’un écartelé de France à la double bordure d’argent et de gueules et de Visconti30 (figure 2). En raison d’une pratique encore relativement rare en France31, cette revendication a dû paraître exorbitante aux ennemis du seigneur de Milan qu’elle fait virtuellement entrer dans la maison capétienne. Ces armes écartelées sont associées dans les sources à son titre de comte de Vertus en Champagne, douaire de sa première femme Catherine de Valois32. Dans cette composition pourtant, les lis prennent hiérarchiquement le pas sur la guivre. Mettant aux places d’honneur le sang de France ils permettent aux Visconti de s’approprier le légendaire capétien symbolisé par la présence des anges aux côtés de l’écu33. Du côté milanais, à cette augmentation s’ajoute bientôt la concession accordée par le roi des Romains Wenceslas du titre ducal assorti du droit d’écarteler les armes Visconti aux aigles impériaux et de couronner la guivre34.
