Portrait d'Anne Louise Bénedicte de Bourbon, duchesse du Maine - Petite fille du Grand Condé, Anne Louise Bénédicte de Bourbon (1676 - 1753), épousa en 1692 le duc du Maine, bâtard légitimé de Louis XIV et de Madame de Montespan. Son château de Sceaux appelé La petite cour de Sceaux, fut à l'époque un centre important de la vie artistique et intellectuelle. Elle y accueillit entre autres Voltaire, Montesquieu, Fontenelle, et d’autres. Sous la Régence, elle chercha à jouer un rôle politique et à venger l'affront fait à son mari par le Régent qui avait fait casser le testament de Louis XIV. Ecarté du conseil de Régence, le duc du Maine entra en effet, sous les conseils de sa femme, dans la conspiration visant à donner la Régence au roi d'Espagne. Emprisonnée en 1719, elle connut ensuite des revers de fortune, tout en tentant de maintenir sa petite cour. Nicolas de Largillierre ( 1656 – 1746) est l'un des portraitistes français les plus réputés des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. L’emploi des termes "atelier de" suivis du nom de l’artiste signifie que l’œuvre a été exécutée dans l’atelier du maître cité , sous sa direction.
