(b. 1588, Deventer, d. 1629, Utrecht) Esau Selling His Birthright c. 1627 Oil on canvas, 107 x 139 cm Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid This Caravaggesque painting depicts the moment when Esau returns home tired and hungry after a day in the fields. There he finds his brother Jacob eating a stew. Through hunger and exhaustion he accepts Jacob's proposal that he should sell him his birthright in exchange for the lentil stew. The two brothers are placed in the foreground on either side of the plate of stew, while behind them are their parents, Sarah and Isaac.
