English: Portrait of Countess Palatine Caroline of Zweibrücken (1721-1774), wife of Ludwig IX, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt (1719-1790).
Deutsch: Kurzbeschreibung: Das Gemälde stammt aus dem Familienzimmer des Karlsruher Schlosses. Hier hatte Markgräfin Caroline Luise von Baden-Durlach , eine geborene Prinzessin von Hessen-Darmstadt, in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts eine Porträtgalerie der Häuser Baden-Durlach und Hessen-Darmstadt eingerichtet. Gleichzeitig diente der Raum als Audienzzimmer. Die in mittleren Jahren dargestellte Fürstin Henriette Caroline von Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld (1721-1774) trägt ein Gewand in der Mode Louis XVI. An der Brust trägt sie den Stern des russischen Katharinenordens. Auf dem Rahmen des Bildes steht in Bleistift die falsche Bezeichnung "Markgräfin von Baden". Henriette Caroline war die Schwägerin der Markgräfin Caroline Luise von Baden-Durlach (1723-1783). 1741 fand ihre Vermählung mit dem ältesten Bruder der Markgräfin, dem späteren Ludwig IX. von Hessen-Darmstadt (1719-1790), statt. Zwischen den Schwägerinnen bestand ein herzliches Verhältnis, was für das Ehepaar selbst nicht zutraf. Die meiste Zeit lebten sie getrennt. Ludwig stand in französischen, dann in preußischen Militärdiensten.
