Description |
The four saints stand under ornamental arcades. Heavenly hosts appear above their heads. In the head discs, eagles direct their gaze towards the dazzling light of the sun – symbols of the pious soul beholding the splendour of the eternal God. St. George and St. Michael stand above the personifications of evil they have defeated. Below St. George, in front of the princess crying for help with her hands raised in a fantastic headdress, the dragon can be seen, a beast of prey, biting fiercely at the lance. The Archangel, depicted as a muscular young man with blond hair, triumphs with outstretched arms over Lucifer, who collapses; his lance is broken into three pieces. Next to him, the black hound of hell bares its teeth with haẞ-filled eyes. Anna and Mary Magdalene are dressed as distinguished ladies. Behind Mary's mother are Our Lady and Christ, and a fountain bubbles beneath her, a multifaceted Marian symbol. Below the sinner Mary Magdalene, veiled with a long black veil, a serpent slithers through a red-flowering rose bush, symbolising zeal and goodness. Both qualities characterise Magdalena. Stylistically, a discreet Art Nouveau style prevails in this leaded glass window. It can be found, for example, in the sinuous lines that outline the dragon with its lance, as well as in the decorations. The plant world is highly stylised. The colours have symbolic meaning. The bright red of Michael's clothing underlines his dynamism and his triumphant attitude. In contrast, the grey, black and purple tones denote the sorrow and renunciation of Anna and Mary Magdalene. |
