Description |
Central stained glass window in the choir designed by Józef Mehoffer (1918-1919), executed by Kirsch & Fleckner (1926), the lower part was redesigned in 1934 and inserted in 1936. The following events and personalities are depicted in chronological order from top to bottom: St. Nicholas enthroned as the patron saint of the cathedral in the episcopal habit with mitre and crozier; below his coat of arms with the arm reliquary, which also represents the coat of arms of the cathedral chapter. This is followed by the role of Fribourg during the Reformation, depicted by a Fribourg magistrate who swears on the Bible to remain faithful to the faith, as the inscription explains. Next comes the depiction of the time of the Counter-Reformation with the representation of four men of merit: Provost Peter Schneuwly, Provost Sebastian Werro, Jesuit Petrus Canisius and Apostolic Nuncio Giovanni Francesco Bonomi. The next scene shows the attachment of the people of Fribourg to their patron saint, Mary. The lowest part concerns the Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas. It was elevated from the city parish church to the collegiate church in 1512 and, thanks to Bishop Marius Besson, from the collegiate church to the cathedral in 1924. |
