Originally the coat of arms were "D'or à la fasce ondée d'azur" (Or, a Bar wavy Azure), symbolizing the Rhône which runs through Chessel. In 1926, the communal authorities placed a crescent in the higher part of the flag: this represented the old "Café de la Turquie" (Café of Turkey) and was removed in 1958. The Council of State of the Canton of Vaud has accepted a request in 2004 to place the crescent back on the flag.
