Description
English: A digital representation of a crest badge suitable for use by any member of Clan MacNeil who considers themselves to be of the Colonsay/Gigha "branch" of the clan.
The copyright for this representation of the Scottish crest badge is held by the author of this image. In Scotland, the usage of heraldry is governed by legal restrictions, independent of the status of the depiction shown here. The crest and motto elements of the crest badge are always the heraldic property of an individual (the crest badges, used by most Scottish clan members, are usually the heraldic property of a clan's chief). Though a crest badge can be freely represented, in Scotland it cannot be appropriated or used in such a way as to create a confusion with or a prejudice to its owner.

Legend has it that In the 1700"s when the MacDonalds, and the McNeills both inhabited the Isle of Islay that they had began to run out of land, food, room and things were becoming very bleak. At that point the tiny Isle of Colonsay became of particular interest with both clans desirous of the "empty" landmass in order they might survive, and so a contest was conceived. The owner of Colonsay would go to the clan of the clansman whose hand first touched the ground. When in those final moments or a rowing contest across the cold and rocky straight, and when the clansman of the MacDonalds had almost reached the shore, did the McNeill clansman pull out his sword and scream win or die! He then cut off his hand and threw it upon the land that from that moment on was to be thier ancestral home. Vincere Vel Mori Win or Die!
