DescriptionCoat of Arms of Philip Mountbatten (1947-1949).svg |
English: Coat of Arms of Philip Mountbatten (born 1921) granted in 1947 to Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark (Sir Philip Mountbatten). The coat of arms was considered 'unsatisfactory' and was replaced by a new one granted in 1949. In 1947 the Prince was made Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich by King George VI, he later married HRH Princess Elizabeth, the Heiress Presumptive to the British and Commonwealth thrones. The coat of arms represents his lineage as a Prince of Greece and Denmark on his paternal side and his descent from Queen Victoria, the Grand Dukes of Hesse, and the Battenberg (or Mountbatten) family on his maternal side.
