Object history
English: Coat of arms of the Danish town Tønder. Based on a town seal known since 1443 that probably dates from the mid-13th century. The town was an important habour until the 15th century when the connection to the sea sanded. The present rendition shows a 17th century ship, not the medieval types of the town seals.
Dansk: Tønders byvåben. Baseret på bysegl kendt siden 1443, der sandsynligvis stammer fra midten af det 13. århundrede. Tønder var en vigtig havneby, indtil forbindelsen til havet sandede til i det 15. århundrede. Skibet i den nuværende gengivelse er en type fra det 17. århundrede, ikke den middelalderlige skibstype fra byseglene.
