Notes |
White House copy of the 1818 painting Notes by Kloss, William, et al. Art in the White House: A Nation's Pride. Washington, D.C.: The White House Historical Association, 2008: "Drayton, posed in the formal yet asymmetrical grand manner style borrowed from English portraiture, is seated among accessories carefully chosen to heighten his dignity. The diagonally flowing red drapery that sweeps downward behind him and covers the table lends drama to the work. The subject's impassive head is silhouetted against a neutral wall that gives way to a view of an intensely blue sky with . . . pink-and-white clouds. . . . "Drayton was to serve in Congress from 1825 to 1833, during the heated debates over John C. Calhoun's nullification doctrine." |
