Under the charter of New South Wales, about 2/3 of New Zealand and some other islands were included under the colony's jurisdiction. The entire drainage basin of Hudson Bay in Canada is not included as part of the British possession of Rupert's Land even though the colony's charter included it. The claim to jurisdiction seems to have been the result of a claim along a few arbitrary coordinates - it wasn't exercised and ceased to exist after an amendment to the New South Wales charter in 1825.
The British government did not own Sarawak. The Sultanate of Brunei leased and sold most of its territory to an Englishman. His family's reign is called the period of the White Raja.
