Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Plate 3.

Arms of the Duke of Argyll. The first quarter "Gyronny or and sable" (for Campbell) is an example of arms which are simply a partioned field, with no charges. The insignia placed behind the shield are (1) In bend dexter, a baton gules, semé of thistles or, ensigned with an Imperial Crown proper, thereon the crest of Scotland (as Hereditary Great Master of the Household in Scotland); (2) in bend sinister, a sword proper, hilt and pommel or (as Hereditary Justice-General of Scotland)

Arms of Sir William Gordon Cumming, Bt. Quarters 2 & 3 "Argent, three bends sable, each charged with as many roses of the field" (for Penrose) show that a bend cannot occupy a third of the field. The inescutcheon, containing a complete achievement with supporters (for Gordon of Gordon), is curious. The text of the book gives the family name variously as Cumming-Gordon or Gordon-Cumming of Altyre.
