English: Assumption of the Virgin (1577) was El Greco’s first commission in Spain. The composition of the painting, which measures height: 4 m (13.1 ft); width: 2.2 m (89.7 in)

, is divided into two halves. The upper section depicts the Virgin Mary rising to heaven while in the lower section people stare in awe and amazement. The figures are not elongated, as they were to become in El Greco’s later work.
