Escena narrada por Ovidio (Metamorfosis, libro II) que muestra el engaño del dios Júpiter a la ninfa Calisto. Ninfa de gran belleza y miembro del séquito de Diana, diosa de la caza, fue seducida por Júpiter quien para ello tomó las facciones de Diana. Embarazada, la ninfa intentará ocultar su estado a la diosa quien, virgen ella, obligaba a sus acompañantes a mantenerse célibes. Júpiter convirtió a su amante en osa para librarla del castigo pero, descubriendo el engaño, Diana la abatió a flechazos. A su muerte, Calisto fue llevada al cielo por Júpiter, quien la colocó entre las constelaciones recibiendo el nombre de Osa Mayor. Pierre representa el momento del engaño inicial, cuando Calisto se abandona en los brazos de Júpiter disfrazado de Diana. Para distinguirlas, la diosa aparece tocada con su símbolo, la media luna. Junto a ellas juega un amorcillo que se apoya sobre el carcaj de flechas de la diosa de la caza. Esta obra es compañera de Júpiter y Antíope (P03218). |
