Description
English: Queen Kristina of Sweden, painted by David Beck 1650, oil on canvas, 110 x 92 cm, NM 308, taken over in 1865 from Kongl. Museum. David Beck (1621-1656) painted this portrait of Kristina in a white silk dress the same year she was crowned. The image contains a series of symbols, which, if interpreted together, pay homage to the queen as a personification of the divine wisdom. Kristina's life-giving spirit flows through the elements and gives unity to her kingdom. The elements are "the earth" (the globe), "the air" (the wind in the veil) and "the water" (the fountain on the left). In several countries, the monarchy was threatened around 1650 and the portrait can be seen as a philosophical defense of the monarchy.
