Deutsch: Balthasar Anton Dunker: Wilhelm Tell bekämpft die Revolution, aquarellierte Federzeichnung.
Das Bild zeigt Wilhelm Tell und seinen Sohn, wie sie die Revolution bekämpfen. Diese ist als Drache beziehungsweise Chimäre mit drei Köpfen dargestellt. Der Hundekopf trägt eine Jakobinermütze, der Hahnenkopf eine Narrenkappe mit Schellen, während der Eselskopf nur teilweise zu erkennen ist. Der von der Sonne beschienene Tell greift nicht mit der Armbrust an, sondern verteidigt mit einem Schild, auf dem die drei Eidgenossen des Bundesschwurs auf dem Rütli zu sehen sind. Der historische Hintergrund des Werks ist der Abwehrkampf der Alten Eidgenossenschaft gegen ihre Revolutionierung mit Hilfe französischer Truppen im Jahr 1798. Am 25. Januar 1798 wurden in Aarau ein letztes Mal die bestehenden Bünde beschworen, bevor die Alte Eidgenossenschaft auseinanderbrach und unterging. |
