[edit]DescriptionEmblem of Iraq (1959-1965).svg |
العربية: شعار العراق 1959-1965
עברית: סמל של עיראק בימי עבד אל-כרים קאסם
Iraqi state emblem (or coat of arms) adopted under the Qassem (or Kassem, Qasim etc.) regime, official from 1959-1965. It is based on the star on the victory stele of Naram-Sin of Akkad (reign ca. 2190 - 2154 BCE), which is a combination of the star of Ishtar and Shamash's solar symbol. The emblem avoided any connotation of pan-Arabism or Nasserism, such as the "eagle of Saladin" or "hawk of Qureish", or parallel stripes of black-white-red.
