Das Selbstporträt von Seibertz wurde 1832 hergestellt. Es ist datiert und trägt auf der Rückseite die Signatur des damals neunzehnjährigen Künstlers.

Der Porträt- und Historienmaler Engelbert Seibertz wurde 1813 in Brilon geboren. Er studierte an der Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf und später an der Königlichen Kunstakademie München, wo er zahlreiche Gemälde, Zeichnungen und Fresken im Maximilianeum herstellte. Später in Brilon entstanden seine Illustrationen zu Goethes Faust. Danach war Seibertz in Prag und wieder in München künstlerisch tätig, wo er um die 300 Werke anfertigte, darunter zwei monumentale Fresken in Maximilianeum für den bayerischen König Maximilian II. Er entwarf ferner Glasfenster für die Kathedrale in Glasgow. Ab 1870lebte und arbeitete er in Arnsberg. Dort entstanden rund 140 Bilder vor allem bekannter sauerländischer Familien. Engelbert Seibertz starb 1905 in Arnsberg.
