Français : En 1914, André Mare est mobilisé dans le 3e régiment d'artillerie. Il est envoyé en Belgique (Hirson), à Paris (travaux de terrassement pour la protection de Paris) puis en Champagne (près de Valmy, Beauséjour ou Chalons). Il emporte avec lui un carnet et une boîte d’aquarelles et commence dès le début à témoigner de son quotidien. Sur cette huile sur toile, André Mare représente un Episode de la retraite. Le titre de sa toile fait sans doute référence à la Grande Retraite qui a eu lieu du 24 août au 28 septembre 1914.
Au premier plan, un soldat français est assis. Il a la mine verdâtre et semble se tenir la jambe gauche. Il est peut-être blessé à la jambe gauche ou tout simplement épuisé par la longue marche qu'il est en train d'effectuer. Derrière lui, se trouve un groupe de soldat auquel se mélangent des civils qui sont en train de fuir les zones de combats. Ils emportent avec eux quelques affaires et leurs bétails. Ils ont tous les épaules abaissées à cause de la fatigue mais sûrement aussi accablé par la déroute militaire que la France est en train de subir. L'ensemble des visages sont cachés ou flouté dans un souci d'universalité. Le fait que les personnes représentées soient coupées ainsi dans leurs actions montre que le peintre a voulu capturer un moment précis comme s’il prenait une photographie. D'ailleurs, en août 1915, le peintre achète un appareil photo de type « vest-pocket Kodak » et commence à prendre des photographies. |
