Deutsch: Isenheimer Altar, ehemals Hauptaltar des Antoniterklosters in Isenheim/Elsaß, Wandelaltar, bestehend aus zehn Öltafeln und einem geschnitzten Schrein, Werktagsseite, Gesamtansicht, Szene (von links): Hl. Sebastian, Kreuzigung Christi, Hl. Antonius, Predella: Beweinung Christi
Français : Durant les jours ordinaires, les volets étaient toujours fermés donnant à voir la Crucifixion encadrée par saint Sébastien transpercé des flèches de son martyre, et saint Antoine qu’un monstre effrayant tente d’apeurer. Les deux saints protègent et guérissent des maladies : saint Antoine du mal des ardents, et saint Sébastien de la peste. Cette Crucifixion est l’une des représentations du Calvaire la plus poignante de l’art occidental à travers l’image du corps atrocement supplicié du Christ. Ce corps couvert de plaies et hérissé d’épines devait terrifier les malades, mais aussi les conforter dans leur communion avec le Sauveur dont ils partageaient les souffrances. À la droite du Christ, Marie, soutenue par Jean l’Évangéliste, est vêtue d’une grande pièce de tissu blanc, tel un linceul. À sa gauche, saint Jean-Baptiste est accompagné de l’agneau, symbolisant le Christ sacrifié. La présence de Jean-Baptiste est surprenante car, décapité sur les ordres d’Hérode en l’an 29, il ne peut être témoin de la mort du Christ. Le saint annonce le Nouveau Testament en s’écriant : « Il faut qu’il prenne de l’importance et que je diminue ». Sa place est ici symbolique car il est considéré comme le dernier des prophètes annonciateur de la venue du Messie. |
