La rétrospective François-Xavier Fabre (novembre 2007- février 2008) présente la vie, l’oeuvre et le rôle déterminant de cet artiste dans la création d’un musée à Montpellier. A cette occasion, Montpellier Agglomération a investi 250 385 € pour l’achat, lors d’une vente publique de Sotheby’s à New-York, d’un important tableau de François-Xavier Fabre : le Portrait d’Edgar Clarke, réalisé à Florence en 1802. La société Rambier Immobilier a également investi 10 000 € pour l’acquisition de cette œuvre. 2008.1.1.

Ce tableau illustre une thématique peu présente dans les toiles de François-Xavier Fabre exposées au musée Fabre : le portrait mondain dans un cadre de nature. Ce tableau représente Edgar Clarke, âgé de trois ans, fils du général Clarke et futur ministre de la Guerre de Napoléon. L'enfant portant un panier rempli de fleurs est saisi au naturel, dans un cadre de nature idyllique, poursuivant un papillon. D'autres portraits de la famille Clarke peints par Fabre sont conservés dans les musées de France tels que le Portrait du général Clarke au musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes et le Portrait de la famille Clarke au musée Marmottan à Paris. Il prendra place dans les salles dévolues aux œuvres de la collection François-Xavier Fabre, peintre fondateur du musée Fabre de Montpellier Agglomération.
