Shiva Natarâdja, Seigneur de la Danse Tamil Nadu Eposue Cola, XIème siècle Bronze, musée Guimet Shiva accomplit la danse cosmique de la destruction et de la création de l'univers. La danse cosmique symbolise le renouvellement périodique du monde, en un rythme infini de dissolutions et de naissances. Pour les hindous, la danse est plus ancienne que le monde lui-même car c'est précisément en dansant sur le mont Kailasa que Shiva créa le cosmos et notre Âge, en prenant cette posture au moment de la création, posant le pied droit sur la tête du démon primordial, Apasmârapurusa, symbole d'ignorance et de cécité, et le tue. Sa chevelure se déploie sauvagement tandis qu'il danse, transporté par le rythme du petit tambour en forme de sablier ou de clepsydre (damaru) qu'il tient dans la plus haute de ses mains droites. Ce rythme est la pulsation du cosmos (mâyâ) qui naît à la vie grâce à l'action bénéfique de la danse créatrice, en créant, à chaque battement, l'air, le feu, l'eau et la terre, et réveillant ainsi la vie ; mais c'est de cette même danse que jaillira l'étincelle qui détruira le monde. Le cosmos est figuré par le cercle qui contient la divinité ; il jaillit des bouches fertiles du makara placé sur le socle de la statue. Le moment de la création du cosmos est donc associé à sa destruction simultanée, symbolisée par les flammes qui bordent le cercle et la flamme unique que le Dieu tient dans sa main gauche supérieure.
