Title
English: Christoffer Rosenkrantz interrogated by king Christian IV.
Dansk: Christoffer Rosenkrantz forhøres af Christian IV.
Object type painting
object_type QS:P31,Q3305213
Description
Christoffer Rosenkrantz was a fraudulous nobleman. One of his forgeries was a loan document to a widow, where he changed the amount from 1,000 to 5,000. The widow took the case to the courts, and on June 30, 1609 the Danish king Christian IV interrogated Rosenkrantz at the royal Skanderborg Castle. The painting shows Christian IV at the window to the left, examining the loan document. The smartly dressed Rosenkrantz is to the right (Lund obviously had no idea what he looked like). In the end Rosenkrantz confessed, his dwellings were searched, and more forgeries - including a royal seal - were found. Christoffer Rosenkrantz was executed in March 1610.

Object history This painting was auctioned at Bruun Rasmussen March 26, 2018, but not sold (Lot no. 1813/177). It was auctioned again on April 23, 2018 and sold for DKK 1,000 (Lot no. 1817/206).
Exhibition history The text at the back tells that this is an oil sketch for a larger painting that was exhibited in the Danish Kunstforeningen and was the prize in its 1855 lottery won by "Baron C. Stampe" (undoubtedly H. F. C., Baron Stampe (1822-1904)).
Inscriptions

Text verso, on label:

Kong Kristian IV, der har antaget sig Enken, Fru Juel's sag i hendes Tvist mod Christopher Rosenkrantz og opdaget det af ham forfalskede Dokument, kalder denne til sig den 30te Juni 1609 paa Skanderborg Slot og formaar ham til at afstaa fra sine uretfærdige Fordringer. Hovedbilledet vundet i Kunstforeningen i 1855 af Baron C. Stampe / Prof: F.C. Lund.
Notes Bruun Rasmussen titles this painting:
Dansk: Christian IV på Skanderborg Slot
English: Historical scenery with the Danish King Christian IV
In the inventory of artworks disposed of in the Kunstforeningen lottery, the finished painting (not this preparatory sketch) is catalogued as having been won in 1857 (see (in Danish): Kunstforeningen: Bortlodningsliste). The price that Kunstforeningen paid Lund was 280 Rigsdaler. The year 1855 mentioned on the back of the oil sketch is thus not correct, although the title carefully mirrors that which can be found in the Kunstforeningen inventory. The text must have been written after 1896, when Lund was appointed honorary professor.
