Die acht Reliefs in den Nebenräume der Rotunde oberhalb der Durchgänge schuf Johann Christian Wentzinger (oder Wenzinger) eigenhändig. Sie sind innerhalb der gesamten Stuckdekoration in der Stiftskirche von besonderer Bedeutung. Die Figuren sind in ausgeprägter Dreidimensionalität geformt und stark hinterschnitten. Dadurch bleiben die Reliefs aus verschiedene Schrägsichten bildwirksam. Die Figuren nehmen nur die Raumzone vor dem Reliefgrund in Anspruch. Denn dieser ist nicht perspektivisch als Illusionsraum gestaltet; vielmehr ist er leer. Das bewirkt Zweideutigkeit: Einerseits gibt er sich als Wandfläche hinter Bilderrahmen und -figuren zu erkennen. Andrerseits erscheint er paradoxerweise nicht massiv-undurchdringlich, sondern wird zum freien Handlungsraum für die bewegten Figuren.

Die acht Reliefs stellen Szenen aus dem Leben des heiligen Gallus dar. Dabei sind sie über die rein biografische Episode hinaus exemplarisch zu verstehen. Jede Episode kann für sich allein stehen. Ihre Position im Raum verunmöglicht es ohnehin, sie chronologisch zu lesen.

Das Relief zeigt den Abschiedssegen des Abtes Kolumban. Nur widerwillig entsprach der gestrenge Abt der Bitte des kranken Gallus, zurückbleiben zu dürfen. Gallus, mit Wanderstock und Tasche für die Abreise gerüstet, kauert bittend vor seinem Abt. Dieser erhebt die Hand zum Segen.
