ent, chaque objet a juste sa pénom-bre et mêle ses reflets aux rayons ambiants. Cest à cette exactitude dela lumière que Vermeer doit encore lharmonie de son coloris. Dans sestableaux comme dans la nature, les couleurs antipathiques, par exemplele jaune et le bleu, quil affectionne surtout, ne discordent plus. Il faitaller ensemble des tons extrêmement éloignés, passant du mineur le plustendre jusquà la puissance la plus exaltée. Léclat, lénergie, la finesse,la variété, limprévu, la bizarrerie, je ne sais quoi de rare et dattrayant,il a tous ces dons des coloristes hardis, pour qui la lumière est unemagicienne inépuisable. Comme peintre de scènes famihères, Vermeer a des égaux. Commepeintre de vues de villes, il est unique. On ne saurait à qui le comparer.Il ne ressemble point à van der Heyden, même lorsquil mêle du paysageà ^architecture, par exemple dans la Vue de Delft et dans le Cottage dela galerie Suermondt. Z,63 de faire un petit morceau de rue vulgaire : il lui faut des quais, desarbres et quelque monument, église ou hôtel de ville. Vermeer se con-tente dune nielle, avec une petite percée de ciel entre deux toits. Cenest rien, mais cest exquis. Les artistes ont été bien étonnés devantma petite Ruelle à lExposition rétrospective. A gauche, une boutique deboulanger, avec des petits pains sous lauvent; à droite,, un atelier demaréchal ferrant; puis quelques maisonnettes, avec une enseigne debarbier ; au carrefour, trois figurines debout; deux hommes et une femmequi porte un coq; des poules picotent sur le pavé en avant.
