Notice du tableau, Intendant de la Nouvelle-France à partie de 1729, Gilles Hocquart loue le château Ramezay à la veuve du gouverneur de Montréal et y réside parfois. Gilles Hocquart continue l’œuvre de colonisation de Jean Talon en concédant plusieurs seigneuries, notamment dans la vallée de la rivière Chaudière. Il cherche à revitaliser l'industrie locale en s'appuyant sur le dynamisme des marchands, dont il déplore l'intérêt trop exclusivement tourné vers la traite des fourrures. Il encourage particulièrement la construction navale à Québec, la fondation des forges du Saint-Maurice près de Trois-Rivières, le commerce avec les Antilles et les expéditions vers les Rocheuses de Lavérendrye. Rappelé en 1748, il termine sa carrière comme intendant de Brest en Bretagne. |
