SUMMARY: Caricature showing procession, with Napoleon and Josephine in center, headed by members of the Imperial family, followed by Talleyrand and his wife, and a dejected Pope Pius VII. Napoleon's train is supported by Spain, Prussia and Holland. MEDIUM: 1 print : etching, hand-colored. CREATED/PUBLISHED: [London] : pubd. by H. Humphrey, 1805. According to Wright & Evans, Historical and Descriptive Account of the Caricatures of James Gillray (1851, OCLC 59510372), pp. 239–40, "On the crowning step of Napoleon's ambition. He was proclaimed Emperor of the French, under the title of Napoleon I., on the 20th of May, 1804, and was crowned with extraordinary ceremonies on the 19th of November. The Pope was compelled by the mandate of Buonaparte to repair to Paris, and perform the ceremony of the coronation. On the 19th of November, the Emperor, attended by a numerous military escort, and followed by an immense train of equipages, proceeded to the Cathedral of Notre Dame. There his Holiness performed a solemn service, anointed the Emperor with the sacred unction, and placed the crown upon his head." |
