Talán a régi spanyol századokból álmodta vissza ezt a döbbent arcú figurát, 1911 táján, amikor a festmény készült, ilyen látványélménye, vagyis ilyen öltözetben megjelenõ alakkal való találkozása aligha lehetett a valóságban. A képzelet szülte figurában mégis akár a mi idõnkben is átélhetõ gyászt, sõt a saját gyászunkat is megérezhetjük. GULÁCSY, Lajos (1882, Budapest - 1932, Budapest) Man with Hat and Woman with Black Scarf 1912-15 Oil on canvas, 70 x 49 cm Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest The burning candle in the foreground of the picture, the transparent black scarf on the woman's head, and the dismay on the man's face indicate bitterness caused by death and mourning. One has the impression as if both figures were standing by some grave, yet one can see neither grave nor graveyard. Trees with golden and red leaves are witnesses in the background of what is happening. One does not know to what period or style Gulácsy wants to refer to with the figure of the man who is wearing a wide rimmed black hat with a big light-coloured feather. Perhaps he recalled this figure from Spain of some centuries before. Around 1911 when he painted this picture, he could not have met anyone like this. In this imaginary figure one can live over mourning. Although there is no trace of any action taking place in the picture, it still shows life. This is an authentic portrayal of sufferings of the heart and the soul. Type: other Time-line: 1901-1925 Form: painting |
