Notes According to this Kivirinta, Marja-Terttu (2014) Vieraita vaikutteita karsimassa - Helene Schjerfbeck ja Juho Rissanen - Sukupuoli, luokka ja Suomen taiteen rakentuminen 1910–20 -luvulla there is an earlier painting from 1877 also called ‘’Naamiaiskuva’’, where a woman is looking at the viewer through a mask. This explains the lack of masks (the point of naamiaiset) in our 1887 painting: they were probably conflated a bit.
