Description |
English: Ilfracombe from the Eastward A stern view of a brig, with a fishing boat on the right and another vessel in the distance on the right, all apparently running for Ilfracombe, on the north coast of Devon, in deteriorating weather. An aquatint version with the title also adopted here was published much later in the 'Naval Chronicle', 1809, (vol. 21, f. p.133), but probably from another drawing, since the main vessel shown going in is a fore-and-aft rigged cutter and the topography is also simplified. Pocock exhibited a number of watercolours of Ilfracombe (1805–09) with smugglers included at least once. Signed by the artist and dated, 1797, lower left. Purchased for the Museum by Sir James Caird, 1932, from Lady Simson. Exhibited: NMM Pocock exhib. (1975) no. 19. |
