Title
In the Champs-Elysées
, 1832
Description
This woman depicted in this plate is wearing a dress with leg-of mutton sleeves that billow out along the length of the arms, a very wide bell skirt, acccentuated by a narrow, belted waistline (most likely aided by a tightly laced corset). Her hair is in plaits arranged close to her head and covered with an 'Alsatian cap,' or flat beret-style hat almost vertically at the back of the head. The little girl is wearing pantalettes under her dress, which is fairly elaborate and similar to adult clothing. Abstract sources: Boucher, François. 20,000 Years of Fashion. New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc, 1967.
