Français : La toile représente le cloître de l'abbaye de Saint-Wandrille, en Normandie (région de France), dans l'état d'abandon où il se trouvait à l'époque. Eugène Isabey s'était intéressé à l'abbaye de Saint-Wandrille depuis sa participation en tant qu'illustrateur au livre "Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France" en 1820. Isabey s'attache dès lors à révéler et à mettre en valeur un patrimoine architectural alors menacé de disparition. Ce tableau illustre le goût européen de l'époque pour l'architecture médiévale. Le courant artistique du romantisme, influencé par le roman anglais du XVIIIe siècle, s'intéresse aux ruines auxquelles il confère une valeur esthétique propre. La manière d'Eugène Isabey dans cette toile relève du romantisme. Il a été influencé dans son style par la peinture anglaise, découverte en 1825. |
