English: Jean-Pierre Houel, Restes des tour des geants, Malte Original aquatints by Jean-Pierre HOUËL (Rouen 1735 - Paris 1813). Proofs printed in bistre, on watermarked laid paper (letters). Plates 248, 249 & 250 from "Voyage pittoresque des isles de Sicile, de Malte et de Lipari, Où l'on traite des Antiquités qui s'y trouvent encore ; des principaux Phénomènes que la Nature y offre ; du Costume des Habitans, et de quelques Usages". All margins. Jean Houel, who learned engraving under the direction of Le Bas and who excelled in the art of aquatint, became enthusiastic about Italy following a trip he made in the company of the Marquis d'Havincourt. He made a second trip in 1776 to the kingdoms of Naples, Sicily and the islands of Malta and Lipari during which he composed the drawings for the book "Voyage pittoresque des isles de Sicile..." which he engraved upon his return. Approximately 35 x 54 cm each. |

Français : MALTE - HOUËL - 1782-1787. Aquatintes originales par Jean-Pierre HOUËL (Rouen 1735 - Paris 1813). Épreuves imprimées en bistre, sur papier vergé filigrané (lettres). Planches issues du "Voyage pittoresque des isles de Sicile, de Malte et de Lipari, Où l'on traite des Antiquités qui s'y trouvent encore ; des principaux Phénomènes que la Nature y offre ; du Costume des Habitans, et de quelques Usages". Toutes marges. Jean Houel qui apprit la gravure sous la direction de Le Bas et qui excellait dans l'art de l'aquatinte, s'enthousiasma pour l'Italie à la suite d'un voyage qu'il fit en compagnie du marquis d'Havincourt. Il effectua un second voyage en 1776 dans les royaumes de Naples, Sicile et dans les îles de Malte et Lipari au cours duquel il composa les dessins pour l'ouvrage "Voyage pittoresque des isles de Sicile..." qu'il grava à son retour. 35 x 54 cm environ chaque.
