Description |
English: The Kaiyo-maru was built in a Dordrecht shipyard on behalf of the Japanese government. She was the largest wooden vessel ever launched in the Netherlands. A group of Japanese naval officers was sent to the Netherlands to follow the construction of the ship. Most of them returned to Japan on board the Kaiyo-maru,. The ship became the flagship of the Japanese Navy, but was lost in the bay of Ezashi during a storm in November 1868. In 1974, a project was started to salvage the Kaiyo-maru. A concrete replica of the ship and many objects brought to the surface from the wreck can now be viewed on the site where the ship was lost. |
