Cette peinture à l'huile de Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse a servi de modèle à la gravure non signée reproduite en frontispice du roman de Victor Hugo, L'Homme qui rit, dans l'Édition Hugues (1886). L'illustration correspond au texte de la deuxième partie, livre I, chapitre III, « La duchesse Josiane ».
