Français : La Vertu protégeant l'Innocence contre les approches du Vice. Crayon noir.
"Ce dessin de Girodet est à mettre en relation avec le tableau que Marie-Guilhelmine Benoist exposa au Salon de 1791 (n°273), L'Innocence entre le Vice et la Vertu (coll. part.). Les deux compositions ont en commun l'essentiel : l'attitude et la gestuelle des personnages, le fond de paysage montagneux, la présence des deux temples, l'un rond situé sur une sommité - vers lequel la Vertu entraîne sa protégée - l'autre à fronton et colonnade. Des différences sensibles (le jeu des regards, la place du temple à fronton, les mains du Vice qui appelle la jeune fille chez Girodet et cherche à la retenir par son voile chez Mme Benoist) excluent cependant une copie par Girodet du tableau, d'autant plus qu'au moment de son exposition à Paris, le peintre séjournait en Italie en tant que pensionnaire de l'Académie de France à Rome (où il resta jusqu'à l'automne 1795)."
