Description |
Representa el mismo asunto de la versión posterior de Goya (P00750), de 1788, el de los aledaños de la ermita del santo patrono de Madrid, hacia las orillas del río Manzanares, en el día de su fiesta, el 15 de mayo. Numerosos grupos de majos y majas se divierten cantando, comiendo y paseando a orillas del río, con una figura destacada de azul en el centro de la composición, que toca una guitarra alargada de mástil oscuro, rasgos típicos de las guitarras del siglo XVIII. El concepto de paisaje urbano difiere del de Goya, que pretendió una vista general de Madrid al fondo, y la pradera en primer término, con todo el bullicio del pueblo el día de fiesta. Castillo recurrió a un paisaje genérico, con árboles de jardín y pocos grupos de figuras, aunque al fondo se divisa la silueta del puente de Toledo. Es un boceto preparatorio para el cartón para tapiz (P03932), destinado éste al dormitorio del Infante en el Palacio de El Pardo, de dimensiones excepcionales, propiedad del Museo del Prado y depositado en el Museo Municipal de Madrid (Texto extractado de Mena, M.: Goya y la pintura española del Siglo XVIII.
