L'oeuvre, dont le modèle en plâtre fut montré au Salon de 1773, fut commandée par l'abbé Terray, dernier contrôleur général des Finances de Louis XV et éphémère directeur des Bâtiments du Roi avant l'avènement de Louis XVI en 1774. Elle devait orner la galerie de sculptures de son hôtel parisien avec Mercure ou le Commerce de Pajou, Apollon ou les Beaux-Arts de Mouchy (tous deux au Louvre) et Cérès ou l'Abondance de Pigalle (collection particulière).
Selon les Métamorphoses d'Ovide, Pyrrha et son époux Deucalion, sauvés du déluge, repeuplèrent le monde en jetant derrière eux des pierres. Celles-ci, au contact de la terre, se changèrent respectivement en femmes et en hommes (ici représentés par des enfants). Le marbre, récemment identifié dans le parc du château de Ferrières, a été très endommagé par son exposition prolongée en plein air.
