(Francesco III d'Este nel 1753, allo scopo di evitare la fine della dinastia, combinò le nozze della nipote Maria Beatrice Ricciarda d'Este, figlia di Ercole III d'Este e Maria Teresa Cybo Malaspina, con Ferdinando d'Asburgo-Lorena, terzogenito dell'imperatrice Maria Teresa d'Austria.
