English: Painted six years after the abolition of slavery, this picture became a symbol for the emancipation of women and black people. At the time of its title, the word “Negress” wasn't pejorative.
Français : Peint six ans après l'abolition de l'esclavage, cette toile devint un symbole de l'émancipation de la femme et des noirs. À l'époque du titre, le mot « négresse » n'était pas péjoratif.
